From: Beverley Westerfield Cochrane

So glad to get the message with so many Pasco graduates. I will give only a short history since at PHS now, but will write more later. Hope somebody from the good old days sends me a message about themselves. I graduated in `53, and my maiden name was Beverley Westerfield. I went to school in Pasco from Kindergarten through Hi school. I married Ken Cochrane and we went to EWCE.
Ken taught junior high for two years at Pasco in 56 to 58, and we farmed in the Kahlotus and raised four sons: Scott, Kelly, Brian, and Casey. After Ken's death in `90 I moved back to Pasco and I have been a substitute teacher for 12 years. I also am Franklin PUD Commissioner. It keeps me busy. If you read the Tri-City Herald you will understand. Really, it's great doing public service, especially in my home town and county.

Look forward to more info from old friends and acquaintances.

Until next time.

From: Larry Green (`55)

This is Larry Green from the PHS class of 1955. It is still a difficult thought to comprehend that we've been graduated almost fifty years. What a great time that was to grow up in "small town America." When I first was made aware of this site it mentioned doing a little biography to let people know what a person has been doing over the past years.
After graduating from PHS, I attended CBC for two years, continuing my interest in baseball more that in the classroom. From there I spent a year with WSC (now WSU), but didn't get any playing time there. From there I transferred to CWCE (now CWU) in Ellensburg where I completed my bachelors degree in Education in 1961. I spent a year trying to learn to be a mechanic in my uncle's garage in San Francisco. A year of that was enough so my wife, Jackie, and I returned to Seattle in time for me to work the World's Fair until I started teaching in the South Central School District (now Tukwila SD), which is located just south of Seattle, as a sixth grade teacher. After teaching in various class levels for five years I moved into counseling, first at the junior high level for the next thirteen years then on to Foster High School for the next twenty years, retiring in 2000 after thirty-eight years in the same district. I had earned my Masters Degree in Education from Seattle University in 1973 in the mean time. One of the nice things about being at Foster all those years was the similarity to Pasco when I was growing up. The school was usually about 500-600 students. The colors are purple and white and the mascot is a bulldog.
Although I enjoyed working in education, there is a time when we all must go on to something else. Upon retirement we moved to Boise, Idaho to be near our only grandchild, which only lasted about eighteen months as our younger son's family moved to the Phoenix area, where we now live.

After moving to Boise we took a six-week biking trip through Holland, Belgium and northern France on a tandem. What a good experience and fun.
Now that we are building a new home in Goodyear, AZ we feel we have finally found a permanent site for retirement. We still bike as our main exercise program, but I also enjoy doing rudimentary woodworking. Too bad I never took woodshop from Hank Bidstrup while at PHS. I have found it to be very enjoyable. Baseball is still a great interest to me, although I haven't played it for about forty years.
Some personal information: I met my wife, Jackie, while attending CWSC. We married in December of 1961. We have two sons, Michael and Robert. I completed my military requirement through army reserve units associated with Bob Gregson and George Grant. Considering what some of the people went through after we graduated it was certainly an easy way to complete that responsibility. My thoughts still go out to those we lost whenever I see the Wall in Washington, DC, or one of its traveling replicas.

To Jim Wolf (57):
You requested information about Tex Vinson. I don't know where he is, but his cousin, Kay (54), now lives in Alaska.

I have just spent the past hour plus reading some of the notes sent by PHS alumni. Many of whom I remember from my time, 1951-55. I especially enjoyed Clyde Janes' comment about having to "walk" back from a game at Hermiston. I talked with Roger Hastings after Mr. Gregson's memorial service and he mentioned the situation to me then. Now that I've read some of notes I need to crank up the memory machine and try to recall some of the events of my youth in Pasco, having been born and reared there, as one person mentioned a southern teacher commented "children are reared, not raised."

I have gone through each of the archive dates to date. I noticed a very strong imbalance for people participating from the classes of 1960 plus. This is an attempt to do something regarding the class of 1955.
I printed off some of the information you had requested in an early archive. Being from almost ancient times by some alumni standards, I wish to respond to some of the "memories" on your list.
The community hall (the old Teenage) was originally built during WW II as a USO building for the service personnel stationed primarily at the old Pasco NAS and Big Pasco. I was fortunate enough to have my father be the custodian at that time. This gave me access to ice cream, chocolate bars and many goodies we couldn't get in the usual manner. By the way, speaking of the NAS, do people remember going out there to go swimming in the pool they used to train the pilots for ditching during the War?  Members of our class were the last ones from the old Longfellow. It burned the year we finished the sixth grade. The excitement of going to the junior high at the Navy Base and having to mix with the kids from Whittier was strange. Even then it became a strong bonding agent for our class that endures to this day. Our class, too, was the second class to graduate from the present location. As I was growing up I remember the area of the high school and Captain Gray being a big gravel pit similar to what the Edgar Brown Stadium was. In fact I remember going over to the stadium with our physical education classes and throwing rocks onto a truck as one of the ways to get the area ready for development. Russ Wiseman was our teacher at that time. Rather than take up a lot of space at this time, I'll sign off and send more later. No sense in over working the memory bank in one sitting.

Take care and feel free to respond.

I would especially like to locate my three old pals, Dale McCarty, Jim Bunnell, and Terry McDonald also from the Class of 55. I live in Hoodsport, Washington. Have been married over 40 years to the same fellow. We have three children and now two grandchildren. I spent my time after PHS going to school which seemed liked years, then teaching in Alaska, then marrying a guy from South Dakota and living in Alaska for 34 years, where my last teaching job was at the University of Alaska as an adjunct history professor. Moved to Spokane upon retirement in 1994. Attended the PHS Class of 55 reunion in 2000. Hoodsport (Lake Cushman area) is North of Olympia and South of Port Ludlow on highway 101. We are not far from family. Spend a lot of time RVing and winters in the Palm Springs area. Hope to make my 50th PHS reunion in 2005.

I was a tennis player and I do have fond memories of those practices with coach Gregson and the trips the team took. Also loved Thespians and Mrs. "D". There are just no memories as sweet as those and those precious years growing up in Pasco in the forties and fifties. Dust storms and 100 degrees - no thanks, but all else - yes..…

To Linda Hensley Boblet:
Hi Linda, I remember a Dick Bruce who lived for awhile on Irving St. I later found out, however, that there was another Dick Bruce in town. The one I knew had dark hair, was thin, and a very nice person. I think he graduated in `57. I met his parents several years after high school and I think they said he was in the Seattle area at that time.

I will, somewhat reluctantly, take up your invitation to provide a little biographical information. After graduation in 1958, I immediately enlisted in the United States Army. As I recall, the intention was to serve my three years, get out, go to college and start a life. Well, the reality was I stayed in 38 years, and retired from active duty only in 1996. Obviously this career choice took me all over the world in that time, and back to Pasco rarely. I had assignments in Korea, Europe, Vietnam, the Middle East, Alaska, Hawaii, Texas, Missouri, Alabama, West Point and many others. I live now in Virginia for no special reason other than my last military assignment was here. Both of my sisters still live in the Tri-Cities though, Edwina Damron Kenoyer, 56, and Ruby Damron Barnett, 61. I have been married for over 40 years now, with two children and one grandchild. Kind of nice to hear from other grads and mull over old times and places.
And yes, the best hamburgers ever were from Wilkies.

Can anyone tell me the year the Tobins attended PHS? I remember them but can't place the year. A friend of mine knows Larry Tobin and I'm trying to place the names. I believe the younger brother was Bob.

Thanks.

You sure took me back to those fun tennis days, Ginger. I learned to play on those courts at Sylvester the summer I moved here before my Jr. year. Then I met you on the PHS tennis team and enjoyed your company for awhile later at WSU. Candy Gregson and I were doubles partners. I think you were singles, weren't you? Of course, Sylvester was a nice evening walking spot for me and my future husband, (he) Pat.

Fellow alumni,
Incorrect player name for 1970-71 [basketball] team! I played on the 1970-71 (jr.) and 1971-72 (sr.) teams! My fondest memory came in 1972 when we beat Richland in Richland before a standing room only crowd! With seconds remaining I drove the lane for the winning basket 54-52! Richland won state in 1972. They had been rated number 1 most of the year. Being part of the second place team in 1970-71 with Noble Johnson who was outstanding, scoring over 30 points both nights at state! The 1969-70 team that went 25-1 losing the last game of the year to take second place with Ron Howard and the boys playing zone defense! To this day I still have fond memories playing basketball for Pasco High and will until I die! I enjoyed seeing the page dedicated to those who played through the years!

Sincerely,

Mark Schmidt, class of 1972 (not Kevin Schmidt)
